Knee replacement surgery is a critical procedure that alleviates pain and discomfort for patients suffering from arthritis of the knee joint or damage to the knee joint. Nonetheless, in some cases, primary knee replacement is not successful due to infection, wear and tear or issues with the implant. In such cases, a secondary surgery reconstruction knee replacement is necessary in order to restore pain relief and function.

The Knee Centre excels in orthopedic revision knee replacement and all other complex procedures, which allow patients to take advantage of new surgical methods and receive quality orthopedic care with a long term focus on patient recovery.

What is Revision Knee Replacement?

Revision knee replacement is the surgical procedure done to change a previously placed knee joint articulation that becomes unsatisfactory. It is not as straightforward as a primary knee replacement because it considers complications like loss of bone, infection, or the initial procedure’s loose implant.

When is a Revision Knee Replacement Needed?

A patient with these conditions may benefit from a revision knee replacement:

  • Implant Wear & Loosening – The loosening and patient discomfort of the articulated components at the knee joint over time is common.
  • Infection – Failure to treat some forms of infection which occur post knee surgery may lead to the need for a secondary surgery. This would involve the removal of the infected prosthetic and its subsequent replacement.
  • Fracture Around the Implant (Periprosthetic Fracture) – If a patellar component is found fractured, a revision arthroplasty may be necessary to secure the joint.
  • Instability & Misalignment – Knee implants may occasionally fail to achieve primary stability which can lead to pain, impaired ambulation, and functional inability.
  • Scar Tissue & Stiffness – There is also an increase in the amount of fibrous tissue or scarring surrounding the knee joint in which movement is virtually impossible. Such severe cases will require surgical intervention in the form of a joint replacement in order to increase range of motion.

The Revision Knee Replacement Procedure

  1. Pre-Surgical Evaluation

A functional diagnosis study consisting of vestibular assessment, kinesiotherapy, and blood work is performed in order to ascertain the sequence for the surgical procedure on knee arthroplasty.

  1. Surgery Process

A revision arthroplasty is performed on the patient surgically removing the knee prosthesis.

Bone that has suffered from osteoporotic collapse is treated via external fixation accompanied by calcified bone grafts.

Fixation devices are attached to a patellar resurfacing prosthesis of a knee arthroplasty to increase durability of bone cement affixation.

For any infection, in a two-step surgery the first stage takes out the implant and injects antibiotics, after the infection has cleared a new implant can be placed.

  1. Recovery & Rehabilitation

After Surgery, patients are usually admitted in the hospital for a day or two.

A comprehensive rehabilitation program is started to regain mobility and strength.

Most patients regain good knee function within 3-6 months while also seeing gradual improvements over time.

Benefits of Revision Knee Replacement

Pain Relief – Resolves the chronic pain associated with a failing knee implant.

Restored Mobility – Better ambulation, standing, and normal daily activities.

Long-Term Durability – Enhancements in material, new surgical techniques, and suturing quality contributes to improving implant coverage.

Improved Joint Stability – Better alignment and enhance the overall knee function.
