Knee breaks from impact can be complex, slow healing issues which impact virtually all bodily movements, and The Knee Centre has an incredible solution – one that focuses on diagnosing and treating fractures around the knee with meticulousness and empathy. Led by Dr. Neeraj Yadav – one of the most seasoned orthopedic surgeons proficient in knee arthroscopy and total knee replacement surgery – we ensure each of our patients is treated effectively for a smooth, hassle-free recovery.

Understanding Knee Fractures

Knee fractures are caused by breaking – either from falling, impact, or trauma-induced injuries – one or several of the bones within the knee joint complex. Some such fractures can stem from:  A break in the lower section of the thigh bone (distal femur fracture). Direct impact knee breaks leading to incremental fractures of the kneecap (patella). A break in the proximal part of the tibia, the shin bone, distally impacting the knee joint (proximal tibia fracture).

Post each type of knee break, there is a tree, customized rehabilitation program focused on restoring mobility as well as functional independence with ease and devoid of any problems.

Causes and Risk Factors

Some knee fractures can be attributed to: High-impact motor vehicle accidents, Superficial falls that lead to deeper fractures, Impact during sporting activities, or injuries that happen where there is physical exertion on the body.

Other reasons such as severe osteoporosis, resulting in weakened bones susceptible to more fractures can sadly be a leading cause.

Wear and tear – Constant tension on an athlete’s knee.

Acute injury – A sudden impact from falls or strikes to the knee.

A limb with any form of fracture would be at a higher risk for people with bone diseases, malnutrition, or some forms of knee trauma.

Knee Fracture Symptoms

Indicators of a knee fracture consist of the following:

  • Sharp pain and inflammation around the knee
  • Inability to put weight on the injured limb
  • Noticeable deformity or dark skin in the area around the knee
  • Difficulty in bending the knee and moving it freely
  • A feeling of rough movement in the joint or feeling wobbly

If you suffer any of these symptoms post trauma, then you should immediately go to a medical facility to diagnose and treat the issue medically.

Assessment and Diagnosis

At The Knee Centre we do an extensive clinical exam of knee fractures along with an advanced set of diagnostic instruments:

  • X-rays – the first stage of assessing a fracture’s severity and locating it’s position.
  • CT scan or MRI – Soft tissue damage and the area’s more complex fractures and complex imaging.
  • Physical assessment – Function of the knee in terms of drastically altered mobility range, pain, and general state of the joint.

Deciding on a course of treatment involves weighing the post procedure recovery time as well as their effectiveness and makes a precise diagnosis critical.

Dealing with Knee Fractures: How to Treat Them

We understand that the approach for managing a fracture is unique to each case. Here at The Knee Centre, we are equipped to provide self healing options alongside surgical interventions depending on what is most suitable for our patients.

For our less complicated, more stable fractures, we aim for self management by recommending:

  • Immobilization – Restricting movement of the knee by placing either a brace, a splint or a cast around it.
  • Pain management – Taking anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications to ease the discomfort.
  • Physical therapy – Slowly, through guided exercises, helping regain strength and movement.

We have found that the above recommendations are ideal in assisting with non-surgical resolutions.

Follow Up Surgeries

Sometimes we need to resolve displaced or complicated fractures with surgery. Our in house expert, Dr. Neeraj Yadav, takes a consultative approach to ensure the patient gains the best from advanced surgical interventions.

  1. Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF)

Most commonly utilized for someone that presents with severe fractures and requires realignment of bones.

Stabilization of knee region using metal plates, screws and rods are inserted to keep the region immobile.

  1. Knee Arthroscopy

Key hole surgery that allows us to both assess damage and repair fissured fractures.

Allows the patient to have decreased muscle soreness after surgery and a quicker overall recovery.

  1. Total Knee Replacement (TKR) in some cases

For severe internal damage or advanced arthritis a total knee replacement can be conducted.

Optimally allows for mobility restoration alongside function effectiveness while removing pain in the long-term.

In The Knee Centre, we create individualized treatment approaches tailored to every patient’s unique condition, lifestyle, and recovery goals.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

For restoring strength and function of the knee, post treatment rehabilitation is crucial. Our rehabilitation programs include:

Physiotherapy – Flexibility and movement enhancing strength improving exercises. Weight management – Implementation of management programs to alleviate knee pressure during recovery.

Lifestyle modifications – Cessation of vigorous activities and knee support usage when needed. Structured recovery plans aid in speed and joint health over time.
